The cabinet has approved a law to set up a university in Sunamganj to set up a public university in remote areas under the direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
New Public University in Sunamganj 2020. The government has decided to set up a new specialized science and technology university in remote areas of Sunamganj. Meanwhile, the University Grants Commission (UGC) submitted the draft to the Ministry of Education to set up a university. For this, the cabinet has given final approval to the draft of ‘Sunamganj University of Science and Technology Act, 2020’. When the new university is established, students from the backward haor and border areas will get higher education. However, it has not yet been determined where the university will be located in Sunamganj.
The approval came at a cabinet meeting on Monday (March 2) at the Prime Minister’s Office. The Prime Minister presided over the meeting. Khandaker Anwarul Islam said the secretariat. He said it was the Prime Minister’s initiative. The concept came from her that this is a very remote area. The remote area also needs to have a university. In terms of that the Ministry of Education (Secondary and Higher Education Department) Sunamganj University of Science and Technology has brought the law.
Earlier, the draft law was approved in principle at a cabinet meeting on December 3. The Cabinet Secretary stated that there are 55 sections in the draft law. Apart from the short title, introduction and definition, the most important sections are the Chancellor in that section 9, Vice-Chancellor in Sections 10 to 11, Pro-Vice Chancellor in Section 12, Treasurer in Section 13, Syndicate 18 to 20. There are issues related to the Academic Council Section 21 to 22, the Finance Committee Section 29 to 30.
In light of this Act, Khandaker Anwar said that the first constitution drafting law of the university with 21 paragraphs was attached. There are now 42 public universities, the Cabinet Secretary said, Among them are 17 general universities, 6 agriculture and veterinary, 19science and technology schools. Besides, there are four more medical universities. At present, there are no public universities in 32 districts of the country, Khandaker Anwarul Islam said. He said the number of private universities in the country is 105.
